Verdict, October 25, 2026. OP to copy a Chroma Cloud database that still writes, before writes stop on November 22, 2026, and to finish that export before reads stop on December 22. OP to keep running open-source ChromaDB when you already run it. The license file on GitHub main, read October 25, is Apache 2.0. Mid to move that workload onto Replit because of the agreement. Chroma's October 23 post says the two companies will build a context layer. Replit's October 23 changelog lists a workspace skill you review and approve. That skill is OP as a saved workflow on a paid Replit plan, and Mid as a stand-in for the database. No letter moves on the AI Coding Agents board. S stays locked. OP or Mid has not run the copy command and has not opened a Replit skill dialog.
Pages below were read October 25, 2026. The agreement, the benchmark line, and how Agent loads a skill are vendor claims. The November 22 and December 22 dates are printed on Chroma's wind-down page.
What Chroma signed
VENDOR CLAIM On October 23, 2026, Chroma CEO Jeff Huber wrote that Chroma "has signed a definitive agreement to join Replit" and that together they "will build the context layer for the self-driving company." The post says work on ChromaDB and Foundation continues at Replit. It names no price, no closing date, and no day when a Replit screen starts serving that layer. Replit's October 23 changelog lists Monitoring Agent, creating and updating skills with Agent, chat and asset sharing, Stripe Atlas, and published apps that keep running at zero credits. Chroma's name is absent. Monitoring Agent is the October 23 article. Source: changelog (opens in a new tab). The Replit post at /blog/chroma is the April 5, 2023 template, updated October 11, 2023. Four rows
| Option | What a primary page says you can do | What that page leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Chroma Cloud | Writes stop November 22, 2026. Reads stop December 22, 2026 | A successor hosted database, and the name of an export command |
| Open-source ChromaDB | Apache 2.0 on GitHub main. You run it | A release schedule for the contributions Replit is said to make |
| Foundation | A product page that still lists Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Slack | The word Replit, a dollar price, a BEAM score, and a date inside Replit |
| Replit workspace skills | Paid plans. The changelog says you review and approve before the skill is saved | Any link to Chroma, Foundation, or a vector store |

The dates you can put on a calendar
The wind-down page is dated October 23, 2026. On November 22, thirty days after the notice, Cloud becomes read-only: no create, update, or delete. Stored data stays readable for the next 30 days. Before that date, stop or redirect writers, move the workload, and start exporting and validating. On December 22, sixty days after the notice, reads stop. Finish the export, confirm apps no longer call Cloud endpoints, and remove or rotate credentials. The page limits this to the existing Cloud service, says open-source ChromaDB stays Apache 2.0, and says Replit will keep contributing. It names no tag and no date. Questions go to support@trychroma.com. Source: wind-down (opens in a new tab). The October 23 post says extra private-repo code is now in the Apache 2.0 repo. This article did not review that diff. Source: Chroma (opens in a new tab).
PRICE Docs pricing, read October 25, still charges $2.50 per logical GiB written, $0.33 per GiB-month stored, $0.0075 per TiB queried, and $0.09 per GiB returned, with $5 in credits for new users. It does not mention November 22. Source: docs pricing (opens in a new tab). The marketing page lists Starter at $0 a month plus usage and Team at $250 a month plus usage. The Team plan's $100 of included usage does not roll over. The export answer says leaving is easy because Chroma is open source, and it names no command and no wind-down date. Source: pricing (opens in a new tab).
chroma copy --from-cloud --all --db my-db is the CLI example for every collection in one Cloud database. Omit --db and it prompts. Local Chroma defaults to localhost:8000. Use --path or --host otherwise, and collections instead of --all for a named list. That page does not mention the wind-down, and its quota note is about copying onto Cloud. OP or Mid has not run it. Validate after, because the wind-down page says to. Source: Copy Collections (opens in a new tab).
Foundation's page still does not say Replit
VENDOR CLAIM The October 23 post says Foundation "hit SOTA on the BEAM memory benchmark and trended on Ramp insights immediately after release." It prints no score, no split, and no date for the run. The Foundation page repeats the SOTA line and still prints no score. It says Foundation learns from Claude Code, Codex, Slack, and more, and it lists Cursor among sources and destinations. Billing is named as database operations, embedding inference, and LLM inference, with no dollar rate. The page does not mention Replit or the agreement. The skill the changelog does describe
NEW The October 23 changelog says Agent can suggest a new workspace skill, or an improvement to one you have, and that you review and approve it before it is saved to the workspace skills library. Source: changelog (opens in a new tab).
The customization page does not say "review and approve." It lists upload a folder, write the form, or ask Agent to draft one and refine it, plus a zip you upload under Create skill. This article has not checked whether that zip and the changelog sentence are the same control. The learn page says to refine every line yourself. Skills are on all paid plans. Enterprise admins are the only people who create, edit, or delete them. On Core and Pro, any member can. Custom instructions, the always-on text, are Pro and Enterprise only. A new workspace skill starts Private. Sharing is Required (always on), Available (off until a member turns it on), or No access. Sources: Agent Customization (opens in a new tab), Agent Skills (opens in a new tab), Agent skills (opens in a new tab).
Agent reads every installed skill's name and description on every chat, and loads the body when it decides the task matches. The learn page calls workspace skills "nearly free" until a task invokes them. The customization page says too many of those names dilute the pick, and that edits apply to later chats. Project copies live in /.agents/skills. Skills in the Replit Skills pane are audited. Skills from the CLI or copied off the internet are not, and the learn page says a malicious skill could tell Agent to exfiltrate project data. Read that folder first. The board stays on October 15
No letter moves. Codex, Claude Code, Antigravity, and Cursor stay in A on the October 15 AI Coding Agents list. Replit stays off that board, the same call as October 23: a skill library on a hosted app builder is not a new harness rank. Chroma is a database row in the tools directory, checked October 25, and it is not a tier. Foundation's SOTA line has no score on the pages read today, so the Frontier Models list stays on its October 15 card. S stays locked on both boards. This is not a hands-on test.
What to do today
- If an app writes to Chroma Cloud, redirect those writes and start
chroma copy --from-cloudbefore November 22, 2026, then validate. Read-only apps have until December 22. Rotate the Cloud credentials before then. - Leave a new Cloud signup alone. The pricing pages read today still sell the service and do not mention the shutdown.
- On a paid Replit workspace, let Agent draft a skill, read the file, and leave sharing on Private until you mean Required.
- Keep the context-layer sentence off the migration plan. The October 23 post does not give it a date.
